Black Angeles

With my Black Angeles series, I'm using classical portraiture with mixed genres – studio and street, black-and-white and color, fact and fiction. My method is to use a traditional studio portrait backdrop but on the street with available light. I'm shooting in black-and-white but selectively hand-coloring some parts of the image. My subjects are African Americans: passersby at 5th and Harlem Alley in downtown Los Angeles. We are strangers to one another, but I ask them to trust me for a few minutes while I strive to turn the personal into the universal. My goal is to create a visual effect that surprises the viewer into “looking more closely" and thus seeing more. My primary influence is the writer William Faulkner who said of his work, “I was trying to put the history of mankind in one sentence." In my case, I'm trying to do it in one portrait.
