Faces On The Street

I began my Faces On The Street series in the spring of 2006 and completed it in the fall of 2008. My method was to set up on a shaded city sidewalk, one with good foot traffic, and ask passersby if they would stand for a portrait. Most declined because they were in a hurry, did not wish to be photographed, or were suspicious of my intentions. To the few who did cooperate, I gave simple instructions: stand here, look into the lens, please be serious. Getting a successful portrait -- one that is both personally revealing and also suggestive of something greater (a longer period of time) -- is extremely challenging in the minute or two my subjects allow me on the street. Always I am striving to capture something authentic that we can all recognize, or perhaps just feel. I love interacting with my subjects and am continually amazed at what they reveal to the camera. I am grateful for what they have given here. Click here to see a YouTube show of this project
